Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was formally charged with murder in the death of George Floyd on Monday.
He was charged with second degree murder without intent, third degree murder and second degree manslaughter, with bail set at $1.25 million or $1 million with conditions, including the surrender of firearms and a promise not to contact members of the Floyd family.
Chauvin, who kept his knee on George Floydâs neck for nearly nine minutes as he struggled to breathe and ultimately died, made his first appearance inside a Hennepin County courtroom via a remote video feed.
Floydâs killing in Minneapolis police custody has sparked a nationwide debate over police department funding. On Sunday, nine members of the Minneapolis City Council announced they were seeking to dismantle the cityâs police department.
A judge raised Chauvinâs bail from $500,000 to $1 million when a second-degree murder charge was added on Wednesday. Mondayâs hearing was a chance for arguments over the higher bail. Prosecutor Matthew Frank argued for keeping the higher bail, saying the seriousness of the charges and the âstrong reaction in the community, to put it mildly,â made Chauvin a flight risk. The judge agreed with the stateâs request for $1.25 million unconditional bail, or $1 million with standard conditions including surrendering firearms, remaining law abiding and making all future court appearances.
Chauvinâs attorney, Eric Nelson, did not contest the bail amount and didnât address the substance of the charges, which also include third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
Nelson did not speak with reporters afterward. He has not commented on the case publicly since Chauvinâs May 29 arrest.
