The first episode of Black Ink Crew NY shed a light on Mental health and parenting. Why is it important?šŸ¤ÆšŸ‘£šŸ¤±

Ayyyeee… What’s Goodie everyone. So I don’t know if ya saw the Premiere of the new season of Black Ink Crew NY. It premiered yesterday on VH1 and the clips that have been released for the show is suspenseful but also heartbreaking. One in particular is a clip in which castmember Skyy’s son Des tries to have a conversation with his mother and during the conversation she tells him that she should’ve aborted him and other disheartening things. Here is a clip below.

Des breaks down over the fact that his mother said some very disheartening things to him and the fact that his relationship with her is destroyed.

Incase you have been living under a rock; Castmember Skyy’s storyline in the show has been about how she gave her children up for adoption when she was young. She finally connected with her children in 2018 and the story has been played out in front of millions on the show.

Last night’s episode cause huge controversy and for any reason. But one thing it did showcase was how mental health and parenting is played out.

Mental health in the black community has not been taken seriously. But mental illness continues to affect the black community at a very alarming rate. 1 out of every 10 people have mental illness in the black community. So this issue is very real. When becoming a parent occurs mental health should be taken into high consideration being that any mental disposition can and will affect the child and traumas can and will occur of not addressed.

Skyy has struggled with bipolar disorder and so has her mother. When Skyy had children she knew she couldn’t care for them. She gave them up for adoption when they were babies. Skyy’s character on the show has been portrayed as manic, chaotic and very violent person. So mix that in with being a parent and you have a recipe for disaster.

While people were being entertained by this episode… I didn’t find it entertaining, in fact I found it to be informative and sympathetic. As a healthcare worker, I have and continue to work with people who are dealing with mental illness and I vouch for mental health as a way for people to heal and maintain a way to live their everyday lives. But disregarding mental health have some very serious consequences.

My opinion, Her son Des was living with a white family and was doing absolutely well in school and in his overall life. For Skyy to come in and bring her chaotic and manic energy in his life was not okay. At the time, she wanted a connection with her son’s. Her first son Genesis does not have a healthy and stable connection with Skyy, in fact their relationship is estranged due to the fact he feels as though she is connecting with them for clout and her intentions aren’t ginuine and pure. Of course I felt as though he knew her energy was toxic. Her son Des had to find out the hard way.

In all honesty Skyy needs mental help. She needs therapy and some DBT ( Dialectical Behavior Therapy) and of course Intense outpatient or inpatient therapy. She needs those who have huge expertise in therapy to address her situation and she needs to sit by herself and reflect and meditate before she can even rebuild her relationship with her son’s in a more healthy way.
